Could anyone help me know why the simplification of the expression 2 + 3(2x + 4) shown below is incorrect?? and if it is incorrect, what is the correct simplification??

Why is this Incorrect?

2 + 3(2x + x) = 5(2x + 4)
= 10x + 20

and if it is correct.. WHY it is correct?

First of all, you're supposed to distribute the 3 before you add the 3 to it. When you distribute, you just multiply the first number by the numbers in the parenthises(individually). I'll try to explain as I go along. But where did you get the x in place of the 4, and then you made it a 4 again? Anyway,:
2 + 3(2x + 4)
Distribute the 3 to (2x + 4)---
2 + 6x + 12
Add the 2 to the 12(all the operations are addition, so you don't have to worry about confusing the signs)---
6x + 14
And since there are no like terms left, that's your answer:
______
|6x +14|
*********
Also, people have been telling you what x equals, but that's only because it's kind of confusing when you put "2 + 3(2x + x) = 5(2x + 4)". It seemed like that was the problem instead of you thinking the two equaled each other.

Hello, I don't proclaim myself to be a math whiz but I beleive this is an incorrect answer. I think the right answer is x=(-18) and I have shown the steps to get to this answer below.

2+ 3(2x + x)= 5(2x +4)

**First you multiple through the brackets**

2+ 6x + 3x= 10x +20

**Then combine terms that are alike***

2+9x= 10x + 20

***Then you can move the 9x on the left over the the right (you have to make it a negative when you take it over to the other side of the equal sign)

2= 10x + 20 - 9X

*** Then you can do the same with the +20, move it to the left side of the equation and turn it in to a negative.

2- 20= 10x - 9x

***Combine like terms and you get the answer.

(-18)=x

First, in the original expression, multiply the 3 by the contents of the bracket, giving you 6x + 12. Then add the 2 on the front, and you have 6x + 14. The simplification shown is incorrect because the 2 was added to the 3 which is multiplying the bracketed terms. No can do. Follow the rule which says "Simplify inside the brackets (if you can), then multiply or divide terms attached to the brackets, then do any final adding or subtracting."

Remember: BEDMAS. On the left, DON'T do the addition first. Brackets first.
Correct answer should be:
2+3(2x+x)=5(2x+4)
2+6x+3x=10x+20
2+9x=10x+20
2-2+9x=10x+20-2
9x=10x+18
9x-10x=10x-10x+18
-x=18
x= -18

2+3(2x+x) = 2+6x+3x = 2+9x
The problem is that you added 2+3 but the 3 must be multiplied through the (2x+x) first.
Although looking at the solution that you presented, I'm not sure you wrote the original equation correctly. In other words, I can't see how you went from 2+3(2x+x) to 5(2x+4).

Don't add up the 2 and the 3.
Multiply the 3 times the parenthetical, and then add two to THAT.
1) Distribute the 3: 2 + 6x + 3x
2) Combine like forms: 9x + 2

2 + 3 ( 2 x + x ) = 5 ( 2 x + 4 )
use distributive property
2 + 6 x + 3 x = 10 x + 20
just combine like terms
2 + 9 x = 10 x + 20
subtract 10 from both sides.
2 - x = 20
now subtract 2 from both sides.
- x = 18
now you divide - 1 from both sides.
x = - 18

that means the answer you have is wrong. there i showed you the steps, if you don't know why. it might be wrong though.

2 + 3(2x + 4)
First distribute 3 times the parentheses.
2 + 6x + 12
Now combine like terms.
6x + 14

You made a very common mistake by forgetting the order of operations. Always simplify parentheses first. Do addition (like the 2 + ...) last.

your order of operations are wrong\ pmdas
start with the () nothing can be done
multiply =6x+12
no division
add6x+14
no subtraction.
simplification again 2(3x+7) but in most cases 6x+14 is considered the answer
you started by adding
