Turn on the television.

The mass media, video games, lack of traditional family values have had a great impact on today's youth.

Today we live in a world where being a thug with a grill and pullin' ladies that have been scarred by life is cool. In fact if you work hard enough at it you can spread a message on how to live a short and shallow life.

People also rather get diamond necklaces for their dogs instead of helping someone who is starving to death.

What kind of society do we live in that places material gain above a human life. Sure, we are a powerful nation...we shouldn't fear an attack from a terrorist, we need to really pay attention to what we are teaching our future generations.

Hopefully we can make a change!
Peace...

I think that people who are by nature irresponsible and less educated are reproducing at tenfold the rate of educated responsible people - and therefore kids are increasingly not being raised by educated adults, they are being raised by children.

And as for what the person above me wrote - you don't have to have religion to have good morals and values. I was taught to treat others as I wanted to be treated - but not because god said so, because it makes sense. You don't need religion to teach people right from wrong. What you need are parents who understand a little behavioral psychology, who are strong enough to do the right thing with their kids, and who can be consistent, fair, and level headed. Unfortunately most parents are only kids themselves, and they still want to be "cool" - they want their kids to see them as "cool" and they don't discipline them as they should, or teach them that acting like a gangster is not tolerated. Have you seen those nanny 911 shows (or whatever they are called)? Even those parents, who aren't that young, cannot discipline their children - when the kid goes into a tantrum, they give in, and give the kid what he/she wanted. Parents are doing what is easiest at the moment at the cost of losing control of their kids, and their kids' respect. In general, society seems to be becoming weak - everyone does what feels good at the moment instead of what will work in the long run. When you have a bunch of parents like that - with no control over their kids, you end up with a bunch of disrespectful, spoiled kids who don't think of anyone but themselves.

All the answers listed, and people not showing concern or trying to help those who are having problems at school (bullying, teasing, harrasment, assualt, and so on). The Columbine killers were made fun of for years and years and years, with little to no adult interference, and I think that's seriously one of the leading factors that made them snap. Gothpunk.com has an article entitled 'American Murder Mysteries', about shootings, and is worth reading.

Children are not given a healthy way to get rid of emotion..let off steam...they are starved for attention...they don't know how to express themselves...too much emphasis on drugs (prescription and otherwise)...less time to be kids in society today...lack of moral within the household and society....
the list can go on and on..but there are some reasons to start with.:)

Because our society sucks and instead of spending time with their kids, parents are forced to work two jobs to make ends meet. Their kids need attention and find a way to get a hell of a lot attention by shootin up schools....

God has been taken out of our schools and our homes. Parents are not as involved in their children's lives and are not keeping an eye on them like they should. Lack of ethics, values and morals is ruinging this country and it will only get worse.

Part of it has to do with the school system, itself administering dangerous drugs, such as Ritalin to children who show signs of normalcy.
