First they have to be sent to the lab for pathology. After that the hospital will either oversee cremation or the part will be sent to a mortuary for preparation. Many religions emphasize being buried with all the parts of one's body. In these cases the detatched parts are embalmed and cared for like any full body would be. They are then buried where the person will be buried when they pass away.
