you throw the stone at the first bird, it dies, then go pick up the stone and throw it at the second bird...no one said the birds had to die at the same time, just that they had to be killed with one stone :)

There is no definite or fool-proof technique, just a symbolic reference to indicate the extreme situation of favourable results beyond one's expectation... Even killing one bird takes a lot of effort with just a throw of stone, since birds are matched with superior instincts or skills of self-preservation !

Whenever I heard that phrase, I always imagined the stone skipping off of the first bird and striking the second.

I prefer to kill in excess of two if possible. I'll launch the rock at a nest that I know has baby birds that cannot fly yet. When that nest topples out of the tree, I know I killed at least two!

You hit one bird which is perched on a branch next to another bird. The bird that got hit flaps its wings and falls. While flapping its wings it hits the other bird, knocing it down. They both die on contact with the ground.
