This is a great question. I wish I had a good answer. There are so very many displaced people and not enough shelters and transitional housing to help them all. It's all about money. the teams pay the player loads because they make gobs of money off the ticket sales and merchandising.
The solution is local community action committees that address the problem location by location and person by person and I do not mean just moving the problem. I mean to create safe areas and safe shelters.
I hear from homeless and near homeless that the shelters are dangerous and they think the street is safer. Go figure.
It will take a groundswell of activists to make it top of the fold issue and bug every city hall till they fund the do gooders.

I'd agree that players could get some reasonable amount of spending money. As for what that exact amount is, I don't know. I would assume that all scholarship athletes at a school would equally get this money. FYI: 1. Not all college coaches are getting paid $1 million+ per year. Some of the head football and basketball coaches are, but the majority are not. The assistants definitely are not. 2. A coach can be fired at any time. And not every coach gets a buyout clause.

In Fort MacMurray apparently there are some 500 homeless, and the weather is already -20 degrees Celsius.
It is inexcusable that civilized countries could let this happen.
But these people don't have enough votes, and most of them probably can't vote anyway since they have no recognized adress. (Some of them can't get welfare cheques for the same reason). They are non-people in the eyes of many in government, I'm afraid.
It is up to people like you and me to stand up for them and insist that our politicians pay attention to the question of caring for them. (Doesn't excuse us from doing what we can on a personal basis, though).

I do not the correct answer
but I'm sure it has to do with the television company. They know that a lot of people are going to watch (Refering to Deal or no Deal) random* people guess suitcases and see if they win a million dollars and from all the people watching that station, they get paid. Most multi million/billion dollar companies don't really give money to the poor that I know of

First you have to really research and define when-hoe-this homeless phenomena began, dont' be too surprised when you find out that a large number of these poor souls wher at one time institutionalized, then the budgets were cut, and they ended up in the streets.

Excellent question - and one I don't know the answer to. What I think is even worse is college coaches salaries. In Oregon, they pay one of their college football coaches about a million a year, but then whine about fiscal problems. Um - here's a thought.....help people with that million dollars a year and let the football program become self-sustaining.

Nobody buys tickets to watch the homeless.
Advertisers won't pay to run commercials on shows featuring real homeless.
It's called free enterprise.

Different incomes go to different causes, homeless care is a goverment's issue, not the pay check for Michael Jordan.

Because America is the Great Land of overweight consumers. We keep buying tickets to watch over paid athletes swings sticks at balls then the salaries keep getting paid.

Keep paying those high prices for events and movies. those are private businesses and the government has no control over them. The public has all the control in that regard. Good luck to you.
