The inspiration for the song's main character, Daniel, has been the subject of many theories, most of them incorrect. At one time, it was rumored that the song was about Taupin's brother. Another rumor suggested that it was about a gay lover of Elton John. Both of these rumors proved wrong. Ultimately, it was revealed that the song was about an entirely fictional Daniel, a blind Vietnam veteran. In an original draft of the song, additional lyrics shed greater light on Daniel's past and identity; but these lyrics were not included in the song's final recording. Some say the mystery surrounding the song made it all the more enjoyable; as the listener is left to imagine Daniel as whomever they would like him to be.

My brother.
Saw E.J. in Vegas last year - The Red Piano show at Caesar's Palace. He explained that originally there was another verse written by lyricist Bernie Taupin that explained the entire song, but they decided to cut it to make the song more ambiguous.
