Sociology is a behavioral science, meaning that it deals with living people (like anthropology and psychology). In the past, it was lumped together with social science (like history, economics, politcal science -- which study the framework, consequences, and origins of human interaction).

Specifically, sociology (to paraphrase a 66-year old book) is a ******* science; it has a Latin beginning, a Greek ending, and multiple intervening definitions. "Socius" is Latin for group, and "logia" is Greek for "study." So, literally, sociology is the study of the human group.

More to the point, sociology tends to focus on literate, industrial societies. Anthropology concentrates on preliterate and noninducstrialized peoples. Psychology tends to examine the individual. But, each of these distinctions is fuzzy.

The three behavioral sciences actually overlap. Sociologists use anthropological data for comparative reasons. We also utilize many psychological theories, from Freud to Erikson. There are also urban (industrial society) anthropologists and social psychologists.

Sociology concentrates on the behavior of individuals, individually and collectively, in social situations. It includes the study of socialization (relying heavily on psychology), culture (relying heavily on anthropology), and collective behavior (relying on many social sciences dealing with advertising, fads and fashions, mob behavior, panics, environmental disasters, etc.).

Generally, students who go on to advanced degrees, like a master's or a doctorate, choose one speciality, like "Sociology of Religion" or "Demography" (the scientific study of population trends).

In the nineteenth century, sociology attempted to separate itself from philosophy and psychology by insisting on empirical studies. Today, that separation is not as clear. But still, experimental sociology relies on the use of the scientific method.

I hope this helps.

Sociology is an academic and applied discipline that studies society and human social interaction. One useful way to describe the discipline is as a cluster of sub-disciplines (sometimes called fields) that examine different dimensions of society. For example, social stratification studies inequality and class structure; demography studies changes in a population size or type; criminology examines criminal behavior and deviance; political sociology studies government and laws; and the sociology of race and sociology of gender examine the social construction of race and gender as well as race and gender inequality. New sociological fields and sub-fields—such as network analysis and environmental sociology—continue to evolve; many of them are cross-disciplinary in nature. Sociological research provides educators, planners, lawmakers, administrators, developers, business leaders, and people interested in resolving social problems and formulating public policy with rationales for the actions that they take.

A social science that tries to study the human in society and all the institutions it can belong to.
It's very criticized since it's very vague and it fails to show empirical evidence. In my opinion it's not a science at all.
