why is it so difficult for people to understand the concept of SPECIAL EDUCATION refers to the field of working with people with disabilities, mental and often physical, and not the incredibly irrelevant questions that have nothing to do with the actual field that flood this forum? Or have I just answered my own question?

I understand perfectly what special education is. Unfortunately we have far too many people that do not know what ANY field is. They type dating information in Dining Out. They put biology questions in Yahoo Answers.

We just have to keep educating them. They are our special education students.

Many people do not understand special needs individuals and may not consider that they have a need for education. In the U.S.A. and much of Europe, our societies have actually legislated that there is a right to education and that the best education of special needs idividuals actually benefits our society.

What you don't apparently realize, is that in much of the world, esp in "third country" nations, persons with the same disorders or needs as our "special ed folks" do not receive special educational services through a public system.
Some are never born because of poor healthcare or abortion to avoid a less "healthy" child.
Others living in places where literacy is not as high can become productive members of society as servants or farmworkers and are looked after by their local community.
Some born to or adopted by wealthy and highly educated families are provided with private tutoring and family funded intervention.
For others, they are given up to charitable institutions where they may live out a deprived existance, wait for adoption and a new life with a wealthier family in a western country, or maybe actually get the help they need.
In much of the world "Special Education" may simply be a catch all like "other," hopefully, we can gently and humbly educated people of other cultures to consider the needs and hope for students who don't fit into traditional 19th century style education which is still practiced on this planet.

You have answered your own question.

"the concept of SPECIAL EDUCATION refers to the field of working with people with disabilities, mental and often physical"

I don't think it's a concept that should be hard to understand.

You've answered your own question, except I think it also refers to the people who work in this field, who are also special.

It botherts me too. If you go to automotive or health, the questions are ON the topic, but in all the education forums, are off the wall, unrelated questions. People just don't know.
Since I am in SPED, I want to read/answer questions just in that area...well, we must continue to educate!
