The smallest gauge typically available for jewelry is 20. Smaller than that is not going to work to keep the shape of the jewelry. Also, the thinner it is, the more likely the body will react to it like a splinter or ingrown hair and try to reject it instead of healing around it. Not to mention the "cheese slicer" effect.
