The cerea box would work as the inner box. It would definately need to be covered in something a bit thicker. My dad used to work for UPS and I know from that it's not good to send packages in thin packing because that's how things get damaged. Around the outside I would recommend brown paper, or ever paper bags from the store and then use clear packing tape on anywhere it's likely to break through (the corners).

When my son was in Iraq I learned a little about shipping packages. The cereal box could be OK if you wrap the box in layers of duct tape to strengthen it. Make sure the address is in bold writing and tape it to the box so it can't get caught on any machinery and get ripped off. The brown paper someone else suggested is not recommended any more because the paper could get ripped off and then they wouldn't having an address. Cover the address with clear tape then wrap the box in duct tape to reinforce.

No. Those boxes are not strong enough. However, you can send books in bubble-wrap filled envelopes, which run less than $1.

I've done that. Then I wrapped it in a cut up brown paper grocery bag. Very sturdy.
