First off we need to know what kind of router you are working with. Please provide the model and make, along with the kind of internet service you have. Also what operating system you are on would be helpful - Windows XP, Mac OS X, etc.

The first thing do when you hook up a router to your DSL/Cable Modem is to turn all the equipment off.

Power down the computer, the DSL/Cable Modem and your router. Its best to physically remove the power cables from the modem and the router to ensure that electricity is not keeping any memory chips alive. Make sure you plug the ethernet cable from the DSL/Cable modem into the routers WAN/internet port. Then make sure your computer's ethernet port is plugged into one of the routers LAN ethernet ports, they are usually 4 ports right in a row on the back of the computer. This should fix any problems with hooking up the cables physically, and now it up to your network settings on your computer. In order to help, please provide the information I asked for at the top of this message.

Thanks!

If it is a software problem the routers manufactures web site should have an update, or you may be able to download a fresh copy to be absolutley sure if that's the problem.

After that if you are following the direction very well, it isn't unusual for the hardware to have a "bug", most stores will exchange or check it out by installing onto one of their pC's. I did this with a web camera at Best Buy.. they found out almost all of a certain camer they had on hte shelves were defective!

Also, make SURE you firewall or other internet protection program isn't blocking access!

Good luck I KNOW it's frustrating!!

wat router is it? ... depending on ur isp ... it may take some time for their system to assign the router a new ip ... my old cable company would take up to 3 hours if i switched what the modem was plugged into to another pc or another router .... or there may be certain settings you need to assign to the router if you have a static ip ... u probably dont but we need ur isp name and the router model ... that would help ... and if its wireless or wired ..
