First you really need to know the various stages of childhood development in art. Something you think might be odd, might really just be very common for that age group. A good example of this is adolescent children drawing things like monsters, etc. It is very normal and gives students a chance to deal with scary things in a non-threatening manner. It takes a trained art therapist to make those kinds of decisions and should never be done by someone untrained in children's art.

I do know that things of this type should be handled by a professional. I know a young man who loved his step-daughter with all his heart & she felt the same about him. His wife left him after only 3 mo. of marriage, for another man. Anyway, she did all she could to make him miserable. One of these was to have a friend of hers (who was a first yr. student in phsycology) Look at a picture her little one had drawn. It was a picture of a tall stick figure of a man holding a little stick figure by the hand. The child who was 4 at the time said it was her & "Daddy". The friend told his wife that it meant that "your husband is molesting your daughter." The mom also told the minister who did not believe it & she called Police. They of course had to do an investigation before they found out that the child had not been molested in any way. Since the police had gone to his work & his home to question him, everyone became suspicious & it took him some time before he earned back his reputation. ALL based on a non-proffesional's opinion.

If the child draws birds and pretty butterflies you can assume that the child is fairly normal. If, on the other hand, the child draws pictures of mommy and daddy drenched in blood, this could signify problems
