What Does Ellipses Mean

It is supposed to mean that words (as in a quotation) have been left out Example: ""Patrick Henry said, 'Give me liberty or...death.'" The second "give me" is replaced by three dots. It is commonly MISused to indicate a pause or a break in thought. Example: "She said, 'Wow...I didn't know that.'" This second kind of usage is very common but incorrect.

It is sometimes used when a writer is quoting someone else and wants to leave some words out of the quote because the seem extaneous. Usually, the writer will substitute 3 dots... to indicate words omitted.
