problems such as illeagaly ran wires, old toilets that don't work, shower in front hasn't worked since we got the place

this is a slum lord who just doesn't want to fix your problem, he just wants your rent money for a place that is obviosly in need of being condemed . stop paying this person rent, save it in an escrow account and go to court. your payments show good faith and any judge in florida will make this person fix the problem or have the owner refund your money to move to a inhabital residence. i hope you have children, the owner may even get a fine for endangerment, let alone that he has illegally ran wires, the contractor who did this will also be fined and or put in jail. i feel you are a young couple being seriously taken advantage of. stand up for your rights and don't back down. i think almost all states have tenant rights against these slum lords. i live in florida and i think you will find i am correct.

hire out the work and charge it to your landlord....i did, and he was pissed, but after i threatened him with a law suit he agreed the work needed to be done.
