You might decide to be bold and ask one of them. It could be that red makes you stand out in the crowd more. They might associate red with prostitution. It's all guessing at this point.

Maybe you are wearing too heavy a coat for the temperature of today. Is this coat for real winter with snow and ice. Maybe that is why they are sneering.
Tone it down with a white scarf, gloves and hat.

I always wear a red winter jacket (the puffy kind) and I've never gotten dirty looks. Maybe yours is very stylish or expensive looking and people are jealous? I've never encountered this sorry.

its because red is such a bright vibrant color, and not many people will wear a red coat. mayeb they are just jealous... who cares what they think though? i wish i had a red winter coat! ;-)
