I don't think people mean to be impolite ,what is ,we are afraid what the stranger has in mind , so we naturally at first impression or contact we have a tendency to immediately create a wall of self defence , as soon that we find the stranger is friendly and we feel comfortable by his attitude, we lower that wall and became more acceptable of the stranger .. Our society has grown so big with so many different attitudes toward one another , that we have to approach every one with disdain .

Unfortunately gone are the days when you knew most people in your neighbourhood and when strangers moved in they were greeted, now there are alot more strangers moving in and with hearing about the rise in crime etc., we are no longer trusting of strangers and that can come across as being impolite.

Maybe because of the sayings "Don't Talk To Strangers". :) Seriously, when they ask we don't trust them that much so we sometimes make it a point to be clever in order not to be the victim of whatever they're apt to. and it sounds impolite or whatsoever they feel, but strangers should also understand, because of circumstances experienced by others, who trusted easily to strangers.

When someone is strange to us (ie: a stranger) we don't understand them, right? Humans have a tendancy to not respect what we don't understand. Of course there are those of us who try to respect everything and everyone, but for the most part if you don't understand their background, or why they're being rude, the reason behind their bad day, no one will look at you any differently. If we try to take each day slower than most would and try to understand even a little bit you'll find that not only are you less rude towards others, but that others are less rude towards you.

What do mean by impolite do you mean when some one says: 'STOP smiling at me u BASTTAAAAAARD ' or when someone gives a slight grimace with 'Hmmm' when asked if it's a nice day.
Id honestly prefer the first... it's more honest.

because they don't trust strangers as they don't know anything about the stranger. Also, it is kind of human nature to not feel comfortable/safe around strangers.
However, in my opinion i think people shouldn't be rude to strangers as you don;t know anything about them and their personality and if you have nothing nice to say just ignore or avoid or don;t speak to the stranger.

Because in today's society a stranger can't be trusted, it is also drummed into us by our parents when we were young.
But as the Simpson's quote goes "A stranger's just a friend you haven't met" :-)
