In your own words, what is the definition of Leadership?

I know the text book answer; The art of influencing people to complete a task as wanted by the leader.

But how would you explain Leadership?

In my own words leadership means taking the initiative when others are looking for direction.Being a good role model and setting the example for others.

Leadership needs trust from your subordinates. You must earn their trust so they may follow your lead.It requires skill and steadfastness to be a leader and to be able to hold your position without showing any type of weakness.The leader must be determined and not be afraid to take risks, while showing discipline in the face of danger or defeat to obtain the objective for the betterment of the group.

Leadership requires courage and you must have the respect and the attention of the people you are responsible for. Once you start losing their respect usually a new leader will emerge as you must make some very tough decision's that may not be so popular.

Anyone can be a great leader from a Mom to a Captain on a fire line.Some great leaders may even turn out to be heroes as they must be ready to take the hit for what's best for the whole.

But that is another answer entirely. Great question by the way.

Leadership is understanding your subordinates, caring for them, listening to them. A good leader will ask for input and idea from subordinates. But that same leader will make the final judgement and the subordinates know that their input was acknowledged. There are many leadership styles and a good leader will know when to implement each. Leadership can also mean doing what best for the group and everyone involved. Also, a good leader may not always take responsibility for great accomplishments, instead it may fall on the subordinates. But a good leader will take responsibility for shortcomings.

Leadership doesn't have to mean by one person. More like a collection or collaboration of everyone involved makes a person a good leader. Leadership is hard work and requires a lot of dedication with everyone in the group.
