I was driving and stopped at a stop sign(1994 eagle talon DL 1.8 L automatic). All of a sudden my car stopped running but lights radio still work. When I try starting it it just makes a loud click noise. (U can hear this click with the hood open). I took the starter off and got it checked and it was fine. Battery also tested fine. Also when I turn the key the lights dim lower though. Any help will be greatly appreciated!.
Thanks so much!

Dollars to doughnuts, you ran out of oil, and the engine locked up.

Pull your dipstick out and check the oil. Bet there's none.

Could be the battery terminal or cable. My toyota was having the same problem. At first it would start MOST of the time... then it got worse and worse. Turns out the cable going into the battery terminal (from the starter) was corroded really bad. I cleaned it up and it worked better. Had to strip and cut the cable a bit shorter though as the corrosion had moved down the cable several inches. I'm sure I'll eventually need a new starter cable, but it's working for now!

The click noise is probably your fuel pump working (which is a good thing).

My guess is you have a lousy connection between your battery and the rest of the car, so it's not getting the juice it needs to start, although it has enough for lights, etc.

Lights are dimming lower because you're draining the battery.

Jump or recharge the battery, tighten, clean, or replace the cables and/or connectors to the battery, and get a good clean connection, and you should be good to go.

1. The click means that your solonoid is working.
2. If the battery is fully charged and the starter is fine you may want to use a wire brush to clean the connections between the terminals on the battery and the starter.
3.Use a little voltometer to check the voltage going into the starter solonoid before assuming that the engine froze.

Unfortunately, It sounds as though your engine may have seized. See if you can put a socket wrench on the crankshaft bolt and turn the crank. If you can't, you may have serious engine damage. If the timing belt failed that could be the cause and mean a new cylinder head and possibly piston, however if a rod bearing seized you are looking at a new engine. If the engine will turn by hand, check all power and ground connections but it sounds like you have the electrical side checked out. Hope this helps and good luck!

I bet you it is the starter cylonoid. replace it and to rule out the alternator is bad once you get it started loosen the positive cable to the battery and pull it off as the car is running if it dies you know the alternator is bad if it stays running the thing is alright.

in case you could bounce initiate, then the hassle is the battery. inspite of the undeniable fact that, the battery could no longer be totally charged for some reason. some battery shops will loan you a battery jointly as they value yours. If their battery works ok, then your battery is susceptible or discharged. Have your battery totally charged and if it nonetheless won't initiate, replace the battery. If it does initiate, then you somewhat've yet another issue. Have the alternator examined! it may desire to be a defective alternator that may not charging or a wiring fault this is inflicting the battery to discharge.

just because the starter turns when its out of the car doesnt mean its bad. it might not be strong enough to turn it over. have you tried to turn it over by hand to see if the engine locked up? i would try to turn it over by hand ( ie breaker bar / big ratchet and socket to crank pully and turn it by hand.. other wise buy a new starter.
