1.) Being a human and therefore social creature you need the acceptance and approval of other humans and painting your nails a color deemed acceptable by your social group is one way to gain that approval.
2.) Self-esteem is essential to mental health and when you feel that your nails look attractive and are increasing your social standing then your self-esteem is boosted.
