First of all what, specifically, does the college you are applying to ask for in the essay?
If you are expected to write about yourself and why you want to attend that college or major in a particular field - then just be yourself. Avoid saying what you think the college staff wants to hear (they get tired of all of that crap - and see through it). Make sure that your essay is uniquely you. Make sure that it is interesting enough that those reviewing it will actually completely read it. Review it several times for errors. Then let someone who knows you well read it and give you feedback.
I remember when my son was competing for Governor's honors in our state. Most of the competition dressed out in dark suits and ties - and they had been coached on what to say and how to say it by their parents or teachers or even college "coaches". They memorized answers to questions. These young men and women were anxious and came across as "phony" - more like actors who memorized a script. My son wore what he always wore to class, didn't prepare a speach and spoke from his heart. In the end he was nominated in 4 subjects- and the judges said that he was "authentic", "real", "enthusiastic", "a breath of fresh air" and "had a sparkle in his eyes about the subjects he was interested in - and could think on his feet".
