Gee, kind of hard to work this one out without a complete backgrounder on your entire family history.

But, maybe, you can start out slow, in another week or two. Put a decoration up here or there, make a meal, side dish, or dessert out of your stock of family Christmas favorites.

Some people just get overwhelmed with Christmas and relentless pressure to shop, decorate, be cheery. I don't know if it's urban legend, but I've heard that suicides go up around Christmas. (Not to suggest that's where your mum's heading, just that there are a lot of different pressures and expectations sometimes associated with Christmas.)

Do you know what your mum likes about Christmas? What makes her happy about it, if anything? Maybe it's the shopping, cooking, decorating, eating, seeing friends and family - if you could work those out without being overbearing about quizzing her on it, you might be able to help provide a more happy and comfortable Christmas environment for her.

I've known one or two folks that were most happy at Christmas getting AWAY from family by taking a vacation, preferably in a warm location. It's just that some people have conflicting or negative associations with holidays.

Myself, I like Thanksgiving Day (USA) more than Christmas. I like giving out presents and seeing little kids happy, but Turkey-day just seems more low-key and relaxed.

Oh, and sometimes, as people get older, they just aren't as thrilled with some things as they used to be. I guess it just gets to be old hat or they're focused on things that have gone bad in the past or people that are no longer around, things are no longer the same, etc.

Good luck!

PLEASE realize when you get to a certain age (and I am there as a Retiree!) and your children are grown and out of the home ... after many, many years of rushing about, decorating (because you have to ... after all you have kids!), keeping the Christmas Spirit alive (and feeling that you are the ONLY one who is doing just that) -- well ...

I can see your MOTHER's Point of VIEW here very Easily!

Here is a suggestion: Now that you are old enough to ask here on the internet -- how about waiting until the 1st week of December -- then going over and OFFERING to help your mum to Clean the Home, put up the decorations, and ... tell her YOU want her to sit down and relax .. because YOU appreciate what she did all these years of Christmas past, and NOW ... it is YOUR turn to RECIPROCATE the spirit!

Then ... when you are done with the taking out of the attic, setting the tree up, cleaning and vacuuming, putting up the ornaments and lights ... how about taking that special mum out for Dinner on you too!

I KNOW that this is something special and would re-energize your mother's flagging spirits. She (undoubtably) has seen too much greed, and not enough SPIRIT -- so GIVE of your SPIRIT and TIME!

christmas is just a dumb holiday which people don't have a clue what they are celebrating, Jesus Santa the tooth fairy for the love of your mommma.... keep watching the x-mas movies and keep following the tradition and you too will be as ignorant as everyone else. presents should be given to the ones you love all year around and give thanks to who ever you thank on thanksgiving every day not just one day. this country just uses you to get your money. Meanwhile millions don't have food or family for the holidays. Others are at war, many die on that day and get sick...AMEN. hAPPY HOLIDAYS

please understand my dear it isn't even Thanksgiving yet, and I can see your Mother's point. we need to allow time to celebrate Thanksgiving first before Christmas. say you're pushing this subject to quickly. be patient and understanding as I am not in the mood either.

who doesnt enjoy christmas?

how about the BILLIONS of people who dont believe in jesus???

don't be so ignorant, assuming everyone likes what you like.

you should respect your mother's feelings, instead of trying to change them to match yours.
