Yes, I swam competitively for years. Its great because it is low impact and wont hurt your joints. I was in the best shape of my life when I was on the team.

Oh, definitely -- swan for a long time competitively (Before I went into the Military Service), and then swam irregularly afterwards (Because sometimes there was no pool where I was stationed).
I still swim -- but now it is because as a low imact exercise (and with the injuries I suffered, and the fact that at my age, arthritis is a problem) -- now it is to retain range of motion and to be able to keep the joints moving -- and I combine the Swimming with other exercise (like walking, Raking the leaves in my yard/yardwork, and other exercise). This way, I am able to keep walking and moving (so I do not have to end up in a wheelchair -- which I was in for a while -- and it stinks).

Swimming is a healthy activity with both physical and mental benefits. Increase your fitness with water exercise, be it lap swimming or water aerobics; besides the benefits to your heart, lungs, and muscles, you will feel better about yourself. Take a break from your hectic daily schedule and enjoy playing at the beach on a hot summer day. Maybe you surf, scuba dive, sail, or paddle (all covered expertly by other guides); each is enhanced by the ability to swim.

Yes it is. Its a low impact exercise meaning that it will put less stress on your muscles. But because it is low impact to burn more energy you need to swim harder. Its also an excellent exercise for the lungs as it helps build lung lining strength (very good for asthmatics).

it is a great form of exercise! depending upon if your swimming laps, water aerobics, etc. swimming has a ton to offer....weight resistance, aerobics, breathing techinques etc. i actually have a friend who had to use a tredmill that was underwater after a fracture in his foot and ankle once, because of the break he lost a lot of the strength in his ankle and foot but couldn't do a normal work out, it was low impact and a great way to build the muscles back up again.

in the summer i swim alot cause im a water baby i would swimm like at least five hours a day every summer and i always loose alot of weight [at least 20 lbs] when i have acess to a swimming pool unfortunatly when it gets cold i cannot swim so i put the weight back on. if i had an indoor swing pool im convinced i would be thin because of the fun effortless low impact excersize!

it works pretty much every thing. your muscles, your lunges, your heart(still a muscle, but oh well), and your brain a little too.(you have to keep count through those long sets) but it is one of the best exercises you can do fo your self, the only thing that any sport excedes it is bicycling because it beats swimming in balance developement. so swimming is great

Yes, it's excellent!
It doesn't put much stress on your joints and works your entire body, it's a pretty easy-going workout that allows you to breathe as you swim.
