Can it be dependant on the alternator rather than the battery? I want to buy a 400 Watt inverter so as to plug it into the cigarrete lighter plug but I am worried it will drain my battery. I will be using it whilst driving on long trips.

Thank you in advance.

400 watts is too much current for the cigarette lighter socket. You should wire it directly to the battery.
The alternator output feeds directly to the battery. While driving you will not drain the battery.
Be careful with the engine off however as with 400 watts output, the inverter will quickly drain the battery.

If you are using the power invertor while you are driving then just plug it into the cigarette lighter. It won't drain you battery while you are running down the road.

Just don't use it or leave it plugged in when you car is not running and you'll be fine.
