I'm always respectful to them. I know they have a lot of crap to deal with. But at the same time, i wanted be treated as an individual, not just as an applicant. A lot of good companies get mad reps because of HR incompetency.

First of all, I've been in Human Resources so I can answer this question for you.

If you are hostile with them, there is a good reason why you are getting the runaround.

Secondly, sometimes a Human resource professional is not legally able to answer a question, also they may have to research the information. HR has more things to do than they can accomplish in 8 hours, so they often cannot deal with everything right away.

In response to Bill P: they often have to make sure they answer in a way that keeps the company from being sued, so they often cannot give a direct answer. Their primary job is to keep the company from getting into a lawsuit. As the saying goes in HR: you have everything to lose and nothing to gain by saying too much.

As has been said before you need to understand a fundemental truth. HR are employed by the company for the company. If you're told different it's a lie, if they say they are acting in your best interests it's a lie............One and only one fact holds true and that is that HR are a companies defence against it's employee's. I work with HR professionals so I know!!!

Like all government departments over worked and under paid, if you remain polite you will get further than if you are irate. I understand your frustration but remember these people are trying to do their best with little or no help and in some cases little or no training. There are pamphlets to tell you your rights and responsibilities so know what you are entitled to and go from there. As frustrating as it gets remember you get more flies with honey than vinegar...in short yell and I'm sure your file gets files in the never never

In my (over 30 years) experience in the corporate world, I've found that most HR departments are basically "gutless", totally paranoid about being sued and needlessly secretive.
