I've seen some websites where the web adress is an IP address, and I'm interested in seeing how that works- anyone able to explain how this is done, please?

First, one needs to understand that every computer connected to the Internet has an IP address. Some are private (i.e. they only work within a private network.) Others are public. In case it's not obvious, a Web site would use a public IP address.

The domain name that you are used to using to access most Web sites is actually a mask of sorts. The Domain Name System - as it is known - translates the more user friendly domain name into an IP address by looking up the name in one of the thousands (if not millions) of domain name servers around the world. Based on a complex series of relationships between the servers, a domain name for a server hosted accross the world can be retrieved in fractions of a second.

So when you type in a domain in your browser, your browser sends a lookup request to the domain name server provided by your company or ISP. This domain name server returns the IP address for that domain to your browser so that it can pass the request on to the Web site's server.

So to get to your question, "IP websites" work because the browser is directly addressing the server without the overhead of looking up the domain name.

All Web sites have an IP address that will reach them. Most however, use a domain name that is somehow related to the site contents to publicly advertise the site. The IP address is the Internet Protocol of the machine serving the site. If that IP is know and entered in a browser address it should bring up the index page of the machine.

All websties can be gotten to by their ip address. Their domain name is simply a command to the a DNS service to let them know that the ip address belongs to that particular domain. A domain can have several ip addresses

if a website only has their ip address , it means severa lthings
their DNS hasn't been set-up
They are using a forwarding service that is binded to that ip address and not a domain name

I think it has something to do with the server they use.
