Naruto and Bleach were both awesome before the filler episodes started..
Dragonball Z is a classic, but a little too jockboyish.. still awesome though..
Inuyasha is very good, but they started to run out of ideas toward the end of the series..

Honestly it will have to be Rurouni Kenshin(best know as Samurai x in some countries) why from all the animes to day that I have seen and I have heard from people.
Rurouni Kenshin brings all the elements necesarys to a great story and the development of this one also it has an amazing story, great characters and the way everything is draw is amazing jeje sorry for my long answer(I apologize)

I agree with the first answer.
So here's my opinion ^_^
There are a TON of anime that can be considered "the best so far" (literally, if you weighed all the DVDs and their cases you'd probably have a ton of "the best anime ever to date".)
anime that I think are "the best":
Neon Genesis Evangelion
FLCL
Fullmetal Alchemist
R.O.D. TV
.hack//SIGN (or just the whole .hack market in general)
Paranoia Agent
Steamboy
and any movies by Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, etc.)
this is a condensed version of my typical list of remarkable, highly-recommended anime. Then again, I haven't really watched a whole lot of anime (at least not as much as most anime fans)

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I´m inclined to say that Saint Seiya is among the very best, anyway, it´s definately my favorite!

the south park episode entitled "good times with weapons".
Thus no anime can compete with the anime spoof done by south park (done as an anime), and ironically it is also the best anime ever.
