You can't get a boot sector virus from MSN. The only way to get naturally infected with one is by trying to boot from a disk(ette) infected with one. (The attempt to boot does not have to be successful, in order for infection to occur.) Besides, boot sector viruses no longer work under the contemporary operating systems like Windows or Linux.

So, your problems is most likely not caused by a boot sector virus - therefore, it is a waste of time to explain you how to get rid of one.

If your disk has become non-bootable, I suggest booting from the installation CD-ROM and re-nistalling the operating system.

Your friend will have to create a safe disk to try to remove it. I doubt safe mode will help. If he doesn't have a safe disk then he needs to bring it somewhere, and have it professionally cleaned. It won't cost more than $69.00!

What's up with msn and all these boot virus' and worms?!

I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus. The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
