Where is the detector mounted? Near a furnace or gas using appliance. A loose vent from your gas dryer, furnace or water heater could be the culprit. If it is just going off on occasion look to see what is operating in the house and shut it down. The Gas company should also be able to help you and usually at no charge.

You might try contacting the manufacturer of the smoke detector for advice, or possibly calling the business phone number of your local fire department and see what they think it may be.
Short of this, buy a new one and see if that cures the problem. Sometimes they just get too old and die a strange death. My electric ones I had did this same thing yours is now doing when they died.

is your smoke detector also a carbon monoxide detector? Sometimes they combine into one unit. Check it and see if it is. It could be alerting you to carbon monoxide.
I know that smoke detectors go off if it senses chemicals and fumes from spraying hairspray and similar things into the house without enough ventillation.

Is this near a bathroom? Mine used to go off when we took showers and opened the door. Also if it is near the kitchen, the oven etc. can set them off. I had a spill in the oven and set mine off once.
