I am pretty sure that America is not ready for Obama and that many people would go as far as move to Canada and to Europe to be out of the US as protest to a minority being elected president. I think that would happen, there would be mass demonstrations (openly based in his expierence but secretly based on something else) Clinton bashing-esque type of behavior. I think that many senators would resign and many (right wing) people would resort to civil disobedience to turn the country upside down. Its a bit dramatic but assasanation is not out of the question for figures whose politics they did not agree with. People like like Ronald Regan, The Pope, JFK, Martn Luther King, Medgar Evers heck, even John Lennon. I don't think we are out of the age of assasination, we just have not had a big enough target. Bush would seem like an obvious target but the individuals/groups doing the assassinating probably agree with his politics. It would be like shooting thier brother.

No man, I am black, really.. I grew up in Detroit (The D), went to Cass Tech and I had the first Jordans, The purple and yellow Majic Johnson Converse and remember the Troop leather jackets. I remember when De'Barge was gay looking (or that they existed) and I can do the wop and remember when the rapper Kwame had the blonde highlights and polka dot pants. I remember where I was when 'Pac got shot and I know we are the only people to put hotsauce on plain potato chips. I AM black but just asking an honest question. I don't think people will let Obama see his first 30 days in the White House. Of course I HOPE he does but I am not sure. Thats why i asked.

I don't think all 300 million Americans are bad but YES I think *a number of people will leave the US. I have expressed about 2 years ago when someone through I was out of earshot. People move out of neighborhoods when minority families move in. Why do you NOT think they will leave the country if they will uproot from thier homes? So many people do it has a name, White Flight. Some idiots on this board, on this thread or related threads will prove me to be true. Theres the way that we would like to see the world and then to ignore the obvious one starts to be delusional. I am not saying that I think 5,000 cities in the US will be set ablaze in protest but I think 10-15 cities will have some serious problems. I think between 10,000-20,000 people will leave the US in protest or decide as soon as he is elected president that they want to recover thier Irish, Italian, British, German roots and move there permanently. I could be wrong but hey, I am not a politicia. I am a Smarty Trousers.

Interesting post... even more interesting responses,
I think you would be surprised to find that the color line would be drawn along age lines rather than political lines. Black and White has lost a lot of it's teeth in the younger generations by which I mean ..15-40, I am white and hang with a near equal black and white ratio, all of my white friends are fiercely anti racist.. maybe because we got a lot of black friends or maybe because we're getting past that horrible barrier once and for all. I think you're on when you say it would draw the hostility out of the ignorant... but that would be a good thing because once revealed they would be rejected by the majority of non bigoted people of all walks...
I would be totally content with any president male, female, black, white... whatever, as long as they were honest and fouthright..
and to be honest.. Obama is a politico man, which means he's got green in his blood,.. he lives in a $1.5 mansion that he bought through public service, how much does he care about you and I? Until the profit is taken out politics we won't have true statesmen we'll have business men that have chosen politics as their career ..
and skin color is an afterthought .....

Colin Powell did get death threats in 1996 when he was considering running. Alan Keyes would never win his party's nomination, let alone the election. And I think you should give people more credit - some lone cranks might hate the idea of President Obama but there would not be civil disobedience over it. Most people would recognize it was a very historic moment.

I doubt things would get as harsh as you describe it. If either of them decide to run, and the American people are truely against having a minority race as president, than the American votes won't vote for that candidate, not start riots and flee to Canada.

I think most Americans don't care what race you are and more of what your policies are. As for assassinations, There is always a lunatic out there willing to kill a famous person just to get their fame. Maybe with more presidents it's more promenant than others but they take significant security measures to ensure the safety of the president.

Everything in this question is utterly disgusting and disagreeable, but I will answer you. The majority of people would NOT move out if a black person was elected president. I'm shocked you believe so many people are racist. Even the klan would get all fussy but nothing would happen. They would be more likely to be assassinated because of their policies, not their color. Whatever dude, too much paranoia in one question. The world doesn't hate black people, just Michael Richards

Well, since Powell doesn't want to run, that leaves Obama and Keyes. I really don't think anyone would try to assassinate them. But if either of them are elected president, I would like to ask someone out there to just kill me now.

No......that's crazy. I have to admit I'm not too famaliar with Keyes but the other 2 are respected people. I don't know who you hang around with but a vast number of people I know would be thrilled to see some change. I'd have definately gone for Powell for Pres. but he didn't want it. I just don't agree with Obama and color has nothing to do with it.

No. And Alan Keyes is as likely of being elected president as Paris Hilton and Powell will not run.

No. No moreso than any of the other targets you listed.

Keyes made a run back in I think 2000? Not sure. I would have voted for him.

YES and if there was a black vice-president they would also be killed by some extremist group.
