I was told that while on prozac (20mg) you shouldn't breastfeed because it can cause brain damage to the baby. Now her pediatrician said it was ok, but another dr. said don't do it. I have put the breastfeeding on hold now as she is 4 weeks. I want to know what others think before I make up my mind on what to do. They DO say that breast is best. But......

I would ask about a safer antidepressant, I hear zoloft is best when breastfeeding. www.kellymom.com is a great resource. Good for you for wanting what is best for the baby!

My goodness you have quite a decision to make and ultimately YOU must make that decision. Here is my opinion. Prozac is not something you should take while you breastfeed. Not even a little bit. You will not get a second chance at breastfeeding your new baby which does affect your bonding. ( I know from personal experience) I am not a big fan of medicine unless someone absolutely cannot function without it. If you were on it before you got pregnant that is one thing. If you are being put on it now because your dr thinks you may be experiencing the baby blues that is another thing. You can combat issues thru therapy and exercise and still breastfeed your baby. It is up to you. that is what I would do. Good luck ... do what your heart tells you.

Not all children are breast fed. I agree that breast is best, but some women just physically CAN'T do it, or their babies can't. Where I'm going with this is that there are plenty of kids out there who aren't breast fed. In your case, it's imperative for the health of both of you. You need your meds, your daughter needs to be healthy. You could get a second opinion about the brain connection...but if it were me, I wouldn't want to think about there being a chance that I could harm my baby. Good luck!

Prozac is one of the meds for depression that nursing mothers are often prescribed.

You or your doctor can look it up in the book "MEdication and Mother's Milk" by Dr. Hale
