A myth is a religious story that explains the origin of the world, natural phenomena and how the world came to be as it is.
The story of Adam and Eve is such a myth, so is the Egyptian one of Isis and Osiris, or the Greek story of Uranos and Rhea.
A legend is a story that sprang up following a historical event/character and became embellished over the years, an example would be King Arthur, or Robin Hood.

In modern English usage " myth" became an expression for a story that is believed by many people but is really untrue.

Hmm!! This is a very smart question. Let's narrow the scope. I believe that you are referring to 'myth' as in mythology and not as in mythography, the 'myth' as in computer games nor mythos as in sacred stories about the origin of the world.
A myth usually is something that has come to be believed, but in actuality, it is false.Sancta Clause is a credible story to kids of some age. After a certain age, they soon come to realize that it wasn't true; all those tales about chimneys, deers and Papa (Father) Christmas amounted to myth. A myth here (mythical) involves a story which is believable but in actuality, it is false. A legend can be a character that performed mighty, incredible, humanly-impossible deed as in the story of Biblical Sampson. A legend actually involves some action by human. Martin Luther King is legendary because he caused an impossible racial barrier to be broken. The story of Hercules is a legend. A myth is a make-belief, a false story that may sound believable and might have been believed at a point in time. A legend is a mighty deed by someone, whether that deed is true or false; but it is a mighty impossible action performed by someone at an historical point in time.

A legend is a person or nation who really existed that have all kinds of stories attached to that might or might not have happened like Daniel Boone, George Washington, Atlantis, etc.
A myth is usually a story passed down through generations, not always written down. that has stood the test of time. It usually relates to the world's beginning or animal relations.
