Assuming that each animal has one head, there are twenty four legged and two legged animals.If you want to know how many of each, it's 12 four legged and 8 two legged. 12 x 4 = 48

let the number of 4-legged animals be x and the number of 2-legged animals be y
x + y = 20 -------(1)
4x + 2y = 64 ----(2)
from (1). x = 20 - y (substitute into equation 2)
(2). 4(20-y) + 2y = 64
80 - 4y + 2y = 64
80 - 64 = 4y - 2y
16 = 2y
8 = y
therefore, there are 8 2-legged animals. Since the total animals is 20, there are 12 4-legged animals.
