Since when did jokes have that "Bu-dum, Pow!" of the drums at the end of the jokes?

I think it is a catchy tune.

Since way,way back at the turn of the 19th Century, Vaudeville... that was how the audience knew the joke was over... they would hit the drums,following the "punch line" Go to the library and watch some old, very old film on the subject.

The Budum Pow is a rim shot. It was part of Vaudeville. Even if the joke was a bomb, the audience knew it was their cue to laugh.
