Aluminum powder is both combustible and flammable

2006-11-20 10:11:43 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 1 0

The metal aluminum is non-corrosive, as are all metals. For something to be corrosive, it must be acidic. Aluminum metal is not flammable under normal conditions, which is why it's used for cookware. For a substance to be flammable, it must be fairly easily ignited in air, like gasoline vapor or paper. Aluminum metal in the solid form is not combustable under normal conditions. However, aluminum powder is very combustable if sprayed into the air, or if mixed with other combustable powders, and subjected to a flame.

Aluminum has a melting point of 660.37°C, boiling point of 2467°C, specific gravity of 2.6989 (20°C), and valence of 3. Pure aluminum is a silvery-white metal. It is soft, light, relatively nontoxic, with a high thermal conductivity, and high corrosion resistance. It can be easily formed, machined, or cast. Aluminum is nonmagnetic and nonsparking. It is second among metals in terms of malleability and sixth in ductility. Aluminum coatings are highly reflective of both visible and radiant heat. The coatings form a thin layer of protective oxide and do not deteriorate like silver coatings.

The element AL is corrosive, flammable and combustable with the right elements mixed with it; alone it is not.

it is definitely not combustible or flammable. I think it is corrohesive because it reacts with air to form aluminum oxide.
