you're not serious right? that's like asking why birds fly. Without literature we would be nowhere. We would be living in the cavemen days.

It's our literary heritage from the past and present great authors who did/have done their best contribution in a particular language to mankind, and, it's been studied/researched in the Humanities and Social Science Faculty of any university worldwide. Therefore, there's some close links between the literature in question and the term 'Humanities'. I mean it's definitely a field of studies to assist human beings to better understand their ups and downs as well as the beauty and joy in the name of aesthetics while reading such unique literary works from such great men and women of letters.

To sum up, literature is the ultimate literary works of mankind, for mankind and by mankind.

2. makes you more intelligent
3. makes your imagination stronger
4. lets you experience other people's points of view
5. lets you learn about experiences that you never had
6. gives you something to do when you're by yourself
7. improves your spelling skills
8. lets people know your perspective (if you're writing it)
9. informs you about what is going on in the world
10. makes you laugh
11. inspires you to do new things
12. teaches you how to do things
13. lets you learn about new role models
14. keeps your mind off of things you don't want to think about
