It all comes down to Luck, as all things do.

Hello Kara: I notice this thread because I have considered writing a masters thesis on the layers of poker; a game of skill, probability, psychology, etc. I saw that this question is about 4 years old so I don't know if you have pursued your thesis on this particular topic or not. If you haven't or if there is anyone out there that is giving it consideration I would recommend a book called the Poker Mindset by Matthew Hilger. It's a non strategy book that talks about making sure that every decision that you make is the best decision at all time. The first chapter illustrates how poker is both a game of skill and luck. I think that might get you going in the right direction. It's a book I bought 3 years ago when I first started playing the game and I continually pick it to help me improve.

The skill in poker is in minimizing the effect that luck has on your outcome. So by learning to play with skill, of course you will often lose to a lucky mug: however the KEY is that you made the CORRECT play and, despite the loss in the ACTUAL hand, you were mathematically a winner.

Why? Because you could replay that hand 100 times and you would win much more often than you lost. Play enough skillful poker and the percentages always work in your favour. More here: http://www.church-of-texas-holdem.com/

Both are important factors. Luck has to do with the cards you are dealt. The skill comes in how you play those cards. Because luck basically evens out for everyone over the long run skill is the only thing than can account for long term winners and long term losers.

Undoubtedly Skill.

Luck means that the random draw of the cards dictates the winning and losing. This is the case with blackjack, where even under best play conditions, the deal of the cards determines winning or losing.

However, poker has live opponents. Being able to take advantage of mistakes, and counter playing styles with other rules means that a player with higher skill will win a majority of the time, over a period of time.

Poker is 75% luck and 25% skill. Wouldn't you agree?

Both skill and luck.....skill because you have to know what to keep and when to lay your cards down, and when to fold. It's luck too because you cannot control the next card coming to you.

I agree with you. I, too, believe it has to do with skill. If one doesn't know how to play the game, how is luck going to help?

Its both, lots of the time it depends on how good you can bluff if you aren't getting any good cards.
