If you don't live in town with houses near by,22 caliber rifle or 12 guage shotgun does the trick.If you do live in town rat traps and sometimes poison baits where no pets can get into it work.
Or where you referring to your neighbors as a need for rats repeller?.

I don't know if you'd like to have a ferret as a pet but ferrets are the natural enemies of rats. They are harmless to humans and are very playful. If you would like to have a ferret as a pet you won't have rats. Guaranteed! Ferrets are better rat killers than any cat or dog. (You can buy a ferret at pet stores.)
Years ago, they used ferrets to get rats out of the cellars.
