Your skates will start to lose the edges with use. When you turn or stop they won't grip the ice like they should. You can get a little hand sharpener to keep them touched up or just take them to your local rink and they can do it on a machine. If they are very dull you'll have to have it done. The stone just keeps the edge sharp. The blades are hollow ground so there's actually 2 edges on each blade (like a small upside down U)

Ha, no... you need to get them sharpened if you start tripping a lot on the ice, or if it seems like you're dragging or having trouble turning. It wouldn't hurt to get them sharpened if you think they might need it.

you can tell if it fell like your skates have a skid proof bottom or you can ask your skate instuctor whan you need to get them sharpened then you can make sure but most of the time if your skates arent smooh when you skate!
