I'm an education major concentrating in middle grades language arts social studies. I really like my major and I know I want to work with kids, but the more I learn the more I think I want to go into a different field of education besides classroom teaching. I do not want to go into administration. I am willing to go to grad school, but could someone please help me out with what options are available to me? If someone knows of a good book or website or just their own experience I would love to hear it.

May I recommend TRIO programs. TRIO programs are grant-funded programs funded by the Department of Education. They work primarily with low-income and/or first-generation college students. Depending on the program, they work with students from 6th grade through college If you've ever heard of Upward Bound, you've heard of a TRIO program. You can also look for non-profit organizations in your area (YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, etc.) that might be hiring.

I taught for ten years, and enjoyed it. But I enjoy the freedom that comes with working with TRIO. You can check the websites I listed below for more information. Feel free to email me if you want to ask any questions.
