Change the 1 into a fraction. In this case, it would be 3/3 because you need a common denominator to add fractions. So your question should look like this: 3/3 + (-5/3) or 3/3 - 5/3 since positive and negative equals negative. You keep the denominator the same and subtract the numerators. 3-5= -2, therefore your answer should be -2/3.

1 can equal ANY number over that same number. so like 1 = 25/25 or 1= 8/8. so when you're adding fractions, you need them to have the same denominator (bottom number), so in this case you want 1 = 3/3 because what you're adding is -5/3, you just add the top numbers and leave the bottom alone,
so then 3/3 + -5/3 = -2/3
