" compare and contrast the image that is formed on the film of a camera and the retina of the eye"

It means find the likenesses, and differences between the two. For example: Film is 2 dimensional and the eye is 3 dimensional.

COMPARE means to tell how they are alike; CONTRAST means to tell how they are different.
COMPARISONS: both are reflections of light from the object; both are transverse, etc.
CONTRASTS: the film is flat, the retina is rounded; film is made of layers of chemicals that make a semi-permanent recording of the light while the retina makes a temporary image as long as the light rays are focused there and sends the image electronically to your brain-- more like a digital camera!

I'm going to guess here and say, you're supposed to find the similarities and differences between the film from a camera and your eyes. Something like that. I don't know but, good luck!
