If its a newborn the stools can be very runny especially breast fed babies. Soy formula is a perfectly acceptable substitute for regular formula. t is usually more acceptable to breaast fed babies when having to supplement. Some babies just don't tolerate milk based formula well until they are 6 months or older. Some are lactose-intolerant and never do. Some babies are naturally gassy as they build up digestive bacteria. You have to remember that babies are just starting out. They must adjust to living and breathing and taking substances into their digestive system. Their bodies need time to adjust and build up the good bacteria that helps their digestion work properly. Colic is very common until 3 or 4 months. Breast milk is almost always best, but not always practical. So supplementation is helpful in those cases. Doing both won't hurt the baby as long as your baby is growing properly.

Whoa. Hold on there cowboy!

1) How long was the baby on soy? You have to give it more than just a few days. Soy DOES work the best for gas--give it 2-4 weeks before you give up on it.

2) Breastmilk is great, but swtiching just because you think soy is bad is not going to fix the problem. You need to let the baby work it through it's system. You can't change anything so quickly on the poor kid!

3) I know it's hard being the grandma--you can't get your hands in there are great as you can. I suggest your daughter pumps to prepare for the change, but I would just hope that she waits about a month to decide what it right for her baby.

It is definately better for breast milk. Some babies are lactose and soy intolerate. Breast milk is always best if you have that option. Your baby will probably poop with every feeding on the breast. It will probably take a day or so to get it out of her system. The poop while breast feeding will be a yellowish mustard color and will look seedy. It will also be soft and smell kind of like buttermilk.

well how old is the baby?
the thing is if she's breastfeeding, she can't do both, it has to be one or the other. if she stops breastfeeding she needs to convert to formula and stay like that. i made the mistake of giving her some breast milk i had frozen but it was still good after i put her on formula, and it tore her stomach up, and she cried for the whole night, but it passed. but if she has a lot of gassiness, then try nutramigen, soy, or lactose free formula, because milk based formula or just milk period produces a lot of gas, so try either of those three, but if she's already taken her off the breast for a while, then you need to stay on the formula at this point...

Breast milk is what nature intended. Soy is not a complete protein; mother's milk is. Soy is not digestible by everyone; mother's milk is. Formula results in a life-time of allergies; mother's milk contains substances that increase the baby's immune system.

changed my grandkids to rice milk with a broad coverage multi-vitamin added...liquid of course. any change always causes a change in the bowel. you can not stop something because of that. it will take the baby and you for that matter at least a week to formulate the bowel to whatever new feeding system you try.
