The tradition of the turkey and cranberry sauce came about because of two reasons- first, the first settlers and the Wanapoeg Indians would probably have had those foods at their first Thanksgiving meal. But the real tradition came around because of a painting- a Saturday Evening Post cover painted by Norman Rockwell. It perfectly filled the idyll picture of what Thankgsgiving was to be about- friends, family, and food!

It's because at that time they had many wild growing plant and cranberries was one of them. And turkey grew wild at that time,so that was easy to get too.
