The first thing that popped into my head is self-esteem. I'm a fashionista, too, but I only want what I like. If you have to have all the latest styles, then you don't have a style. Not of your own anyway. Clothes are an awesome way to express yourself. By showing who you are without being trendy builds your sense of self...and helps your bank account!

There are a lot of reasons that can go into this, so don't take any one of the things I'm about to say as "absolute."
The first, and most likely, possibility is just insecurity. There are an infinite number of reasons why any person is insecure about anything... and the fact is, everyone is insecure about something. Everyone expresses these things in different ways, but one that is VERY common is trying to "fit in." A lot of the time this means being up to date with everything popular and hot, keeping in style and making sure you have all the best new gadgets and so on... again, everyone does this differently, and every sub-culture has it's own "what's hot" to be pined over and envied.
Another reason could simply be that you are "addicted" to the feeling that you get when you have the next cool look. This may sound silly, but shopping addiction is a very real thing, and it's not because people are addicted to the actual shopping... they get addicted to that feeling of control and power over having EXACTLY what they want, when they want it. This, strangely enough, falls back to insecurity if you go the psychological route, but the more up front issue could be just that you are addicted to that feeling you get.
Then there's always that rare, barely conceivable, option... you just like it. Sometimes there's no mystery behind it all... sometimes people really do just like to do something, and that's as simple as it gets. Maybe you just like to "look cool" because it is YOU.
That last option is highly unlikely... but hey, if you aren't hurting yourself or anyone else, and you aren't getting yourself into debt or trouble with anyone... hey, there are a lot worse habits to have. I would honestly think about forcing yourself to "stop" for a while though, and see how that affects you.

You should think about what your own personal style is. Who are you and what do you want people to say or think when they see you. What kind of first impression do you want to give. There is nothing wrong with wanting to look "cool" or fit in, everyone wants that in their own way. You will find your own style and it will be your own "cool" not anyone Else's. And do you want to look like everyone else? If you do want the latest be careful what you invest in, the trendy items should be cheap and then invest in items that will stand the test of time, that will last through the seasons of trends.
Designers count on you and all of us to want to look "cool" and follow trends, why do you think they keep on bringing them back every ten years!! Advertising in very good at creating a huge need in the fashion world!!
You are right for wanting to look cool but at what expense?
You are not wrong, you are just real.

You are probably greatly influenced by your friends and peers and you may not even realize it. You want to feel accepted and therefore you think you have to keep up with what everyone else is doing. Most of the time people grow out of this, but som never do. You should not worry so much about what is "cool", just what makes you comfortable!
