The southernmost part of Argentina is Cape Horn, or Terra del Fuego. It is a cold and windswept collection of rocky headlands and have been feared by sailors for centuries. Most ships travel through the Strait of Magellen, which is the northern boundry of Terra del Fuego. This strait provides a relatively safe alternative to "rounding the Horn." People in the area heard goat, man weather stations, assist in navigation. It is the southern most continental point to Antartica, which is why Chile claims a large swath of that continent.

Patagonia is the type of place you wish you would never be stuck without food or warm clothes. It is cold, barren, windy as all get-out. I've heard it has the raw beauty and appeal that all harsh climates do. Very little in the way of human contamination, and the wildlife is relatively undisturbed. Some native tribes live there in relative peace. Although I can't imagine being too eager to go bother them.

Yes it is very close, the closest, I believe, that any of the other continents get to Antartica.

The island of Tierra del Fuego is split almost in half by Argentina and Chile. It is very mountainous in most parts, sparsely populated and is not particularly lush although there is vegitation.

It is relatively barren, very cold and windy. South of that point
is Anartica which is a frozen wasteland.

Dry. But also cold in winter (August) and hot in summer (January)

It's supposed to be really cold (duh...) and the winds are really strong - especially on the ocean. That's one reason why the Panama Canal was created, because it was so hard for ships to sail around.
