Use a cash machine with a bank debit card. Cash using a credit card attracts heavier charges. Check with your bank what the charge for each withdrawal will be and make sure that you have sufficient funds. Some banks such as Nationwide Flex Account or Credit Card make no charge for commission, but the exchange rates may be a bit lower than that quoted on the day. Otherwise, obtain travellers cheques in Euros or other currencies where appropriate for greater protection. It is cheaper than using sterling travellers cheques as you may have to pay commission on each transaction. Changing money in hotels tends to be more expensive than banks. Remember, the fewer transactions, the cheaper it will be, but try not to carry too much cash around. Use your debit or credit card for purchases rather than cash.

Open 2 accounts with Nationwide Building Society: e-savings which is an internet account that pays a reasonable rate of interest, and a flex account which will give you a Visa debit card.
You can move money from e-savings to flex account as and when you need it from any internet cafe and then withdraw money from an ATM at a reasonable exchange rate and with no charges.

As long as you keep off the beer you should manage ok, try and get hold of a copy of The Hitch Hikers Guide To Europe by Ken Welsh, it may not be printed any more but if you can get hold of an old copy its a good read for anyone thinking of doing a Europe trip...

Get an ATM card with both a mag strip and an IC chip. The first one uses 4 digit pin, the secon 6 digits. Different countries (and banks) use one or the other system.

Nationwide do an account that lets you take out the cash from the hole in the wall with no charges. Most other UK banks will add a charge if you take money out of your account while abroad.

Open a Nationwide account. They don't charge a fee for ATM withdrawals abroad.
