Post offices, municipal clerk's offices. Need to check the hours since not all offer the service throughout the day, or for that matter certain days of the week. Some locations request that you make an appointment.

If you're a AAA member, they're also providing assistance at their offices since the passport requirement to cross into Canada and Mexico will go into effect early 2007.

And download and fill out the necessary forms and get the photos done ahead of time, to reduce the hassle.

Actually you can get a passport at the post office. You will need passport photos taken. You can get those cheap at most 1 hr poto places. You will need a photo ID and birth certificate.

Not all post offices can issue a passport but the clerk should tell you the closest location. You can find out yourself with your zip code at the following U.S. State Dept site:

They have forms you can fill out to get one and you can go to any camera shop or Walgreens for the picture to go with it. There's a photo shop across the street from the INS office near Jackson and Dearborn.

you get your passport at the post office!!! Just bring a picture for the passport, your i.d. and pay your fee.

in most states the dept of motor vehicles issues them not the usps
