We all hate how little power we have over the government and how we cant do anything to stop the govt from over using its power. I am sure that everyone is also sick of having to choose the lesser of two evils when it comes to elections. I have been researching truly democratic countries (and how to start one myself) and the only one I found is Switzerland. I am American so I am not going to move just because I am sick of the US govt. I want to know why we cant change our govt type to be a true democracy. Obviously, the govt officials will not want this to happen because they will loose their power but the constitution says that the people have the right to change their govt type. Please let me know if you are aware of any initiatives like this and where I could find them. Only serious answers please.

I understand that the US is so large that it is difficult to have everyone vote but we have something called technology, like the internet, which brings all of us together. Also, I understand that we have representatives that we choose but I also know that they are biased and corrupt so please dont make a case for how our representatives are supposed to handle everything. Also, most representatives are too much into their parties views to where they dont accurately reprsents their people.

The earliest recorded history of direct democrcay would be the one practiced by the Greeks. They would all asemble at the market place and would discuss and would vote on matters of state but as the population grow, it became evident that there would not only be logical concerns but peace and order as well. And so representative democracy was born.

Imagine in the US if every bill that will be passed, the entire US population would go to debate how the bill will be phrased, worded, revised and voted. Even the country you mentioned is no longer near the pure democracy espoused by the Greeks because someone crafts the bill before tossing it to the population for the vote.

In the end, a look at US Constitution would tell us that there is still traces of direct democracy in the U.S. During the last midterm election, we have seen states voting for different referendums and ammendments. Californias exercised direct democracy by calling for a re-call. And amendments were added to the US Consitution through direct democracy.

A direct democracy would result in a mob rule that would make today's representative democracy look restrained in comparison.

Because we have the most Freedom with a Republic.
We don't want to give up Freedom to become a Democracy.
However, Democrats want to give up Freedom to become a Socialist Nation, like the old Soviet Union.
