It’s a pun on donkey’s ears, they being long. The phrase, meaning a long time, is chiefly in British use, though known in the USA and elsewhere, and was first recorded in 1916 as donkey’s ears (which is why we’re sure about the punning origin). Within ten years or so it is recorded in the modern form. The idea was supported by the belief that donkeys did in fact live a very long time.

The Catholics would want ONLY their definitions given. The main line Protestants would never agree on any definition given. The Mormons would change the definitions when it suited their purpose. The Muslims would be too busy executing gays. The Buddhists wouldn't care. And the Fundamentalists would never understand them. And heck, I already disagree with your definitions. In actuality one of the more difficult problems on this forum is that no one has the same definitions for anything. Or worse the definition they are using is unclear. I would add several problems that cause "fuzzy thinking" 1) Just because we can (or may) present a persuasive argument for the existence of a creator, just why should this creator be equated with the christians' (or any one else's) concept of God? 2) Why are some Christians ever ready to lash out at "atheists" but nary a word about agnostics who are most probably much more numerous. 3) Why is it that too many people think logic and reason are evil characteristics? 4) Why can some people believe that two contradictory "beliefs" can be held at the same time? 5) Why do so many "pro-lifers" define an early stage embryo, which can neither think or be self aware, as a human being? 6) How can so many "literal creationist" expound so authoritatively on evolution without having the slightest idea of what it is all about? 7) Why do so many "religious" people automatically equate either atheism or agnosticism with immorality? 8) Why do so many people believe that ignorance is a virtue? 9) Why are some of the most determined Christians so ignorant about their own Bible? 10) How can some Christians believe that the various authors of the Bible could speak about concepts of which they had not the slightest idea? How about defining "God" or "religion" or even "adultery" or "fornication"? By the way, I wonder how many Christains out there realize that the word "adultery" as written in Deruteronomy, and as written in Matthew, meant DIFFERENT things? I wonder how many Christians even KNOW what the 10 Commandments are (as they appear in Deuteronomy) let alone even try to follow them. And finally the one word which NEEDS defining is the word "nature" or the phrase "against nature." In the Greek New Testament the phrase is "para physin" and as written 2000 years ago "against nature" had an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT meaning than it does today. ======================================... And CHERYLE: "PLEASE define "religion"! The Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary defines it as follows: "a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith." Under this definition then atheism (which is a belief without the possibility of proof from the material universe) that God does NOT exist is definitely a religion. It encompasses this person's system of belief. ======================================... And SECKSAY. . . Please, FIREBALL brightens my day. Whenever I need a good laugh (or a good cry) I re-read some of her replies.
