A cheerleader can go out and do what a football player or basketball player does on the first day. She or he may not throw as far or score a basket, but she'll come close.
A football can attempt to learn the proper way to put up a stunt. He probably won't get it.
A football player catches balls. A cheerleader catches people. Who has to be more of an athlete to keep someone from being severely injured or dying?
I'm sure you'll pick someone that agrees with you as the best answer. But no matter what, try keeping up with a cheerleaders practice.
Oh, and one more thing, high school football and basketball players practice approximately five months a year. A cheerleader practices 10 months a year.

In competion yes it could be considered a sport because cheerleaders are scored points for all the little flips and so forth, but when its just cheering under the Friday night lights, then no.
I will say that it is physical, but that doesn't define a sport as being a sport, golf is a sport butyet no real physicalatributes are needed to play.

Some people would call it a sport, but i think you give a good account when you say about their "servicing" the athletes. No if you ask me cheerleading is not a real sport

I think that every one who said that it is not a sport have never tried it. Do you people have any idea how hard it is? If you don't exercise daily, watch what you eat, you won't make it! Some one tell me why it's not a sport? You compete witch means you judged, some one is telling you if your good or not. Like in other sports your up against some one well that is the same in cheerleading. Have you people watch the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders? That will tell you right there! It is a sport! And so is dance for that matter!!!!!!!!! Why don't you people try it!!!!!!!

It depends on your perspective. Often times certain sports in which cheerleaders simply jump around and shout encouraging words can lead one to believe the cheerleading is a total scam. On the other hand cheerleading in the Midwest is a big deal to many and competitive teams have very physically demanding routines. I don't really have any extreme opinion about cheerleading, it's more of just a respect for those who are really into it and not just for the High school status.

I think it is a sport. I myself have never cheered a day in my life, but my bff of 13 years has. And throughout that 13 year friendship I've gone to competitions and watched what really goes on. I'm not even kidding - some of the things those cheerleaders do are intense. It really does take conditioning, strength, and stamina to do what they do - the same things needed for football, for example.

Hex yes. Cheerleading is as much of a sport as football and b-ball is. Girls (and some boys) get hurt during this sport, it has competitions and everything like that. Cheerleading is a sport and a popular one at that.
I AM IN 9TH GRADE AND I CHEERED IN 7TH GRADE. I WAS THE CAPTIN OF MY SQUAD IN 8TH GRADE, AND I GOT HURT TWO TIMES DURING MY B-BALL SEASON. OUR TEAM WENT TO COMP. AND WON. WE ALSO, CHEERED WITH NFL EUROPE CHEERLEADERS. CHEERING TAKES A LOT LOT LOT OF PRACTICE. ANYBODY WHO DOES NOT AGREE THIS IS A SPORT IS OBVIOUSLY NOT GOOD AT IT OR, THEY ARE JUST JEALOUS I GUESS. I AM STILL GETTING BETTER AT IT AND I HOPE THAT NOBODY REALLY THINKS THAT CHEERIN IS STUPID. GIVE IT A TRY, IT RAISES SELF CONFIDENCE AND IT MAKED PPL WORK AS A TEAM. ALSO, US CHEERLEADERS DONT JUST "SERVICE" ATHLETES, WE MAKE THE CROWD AND THE TEAM HAVE MORE SPIRIT. NOW, IF YOU CAN SAY THAT U HAVE NEVER HEARD A GOOD CHEER AND HAVE NOT MEMORIZED IT, I WILL CALL U A LIAR.

I don't care for cheerleaders, but it IS considered a real sport. Competitions and everything... hey, I probably can't memorize those moves (nor want to). It's like if someone asked if bowling is a real sport. Well... can YOU hit a strike every single time?

I would say cheering is a sport. Personally, i do not like the sport but i know in high school that it is really hard and takes lots of work to do. you need to have the gymnastics part down and there is a lot of practicing. It is really cool to watch but i do not care for it. i would say that it is a sport = )

Just cheerleading on the sidelines, no.
But cheerleading in competitions, probably so. We have lower requirements for other sports, too, so why not?
